From Litti-Chokha to Livelihood

A Taste of Dignity from Rural Bihar

In rural Bihar, Phoolmati Devi, 68, found herself alone and
struggling after her husband's death. Her sons
moved away, and she survived on charity. But she still
had something precious: her hands, her spirit, and
her legendary litti-chokha.
Through Project Navjeevan, Jeevan Jyoti Sewa Sanstha
provided her a small grant to buy a clay stove and raw
materials. She began selling litti-chokha near a local school.
Her stall became a hit. Today, she earns ₹400–₹500 daily
and has regained her independence.
She says,

Pehle bhiksha mein jeevan chal raha tha. Aaj apne
haathon se kama rahi hoon. Litti ne meri izzat
wapas di.
